French briefing
You have a mixed force of Canadian militia, French marines, Coureurs des Bois and Huron indians.

You have been sent to a part of the frontier that is occupied by enemy soldiers and settlers. Your mission is to spread terror amongst the local population, gather information on the geography of the area, burn any settlements you find and return to your start line to report.

You must explore each sector of the table and exit the table at your starting point.

A sector is considered to be explored if you have a group of figures in the sector at the end of a turn.

If at least a third of your force has left the table and you have explored all the sectors you have completed your mission.

British briefing
You have a mixed force of light infantry – British and Gage’s provincials, Rangers, Mohican Indians and a company of provincials – the Pennsylvania Regiment.

Scouts have informed you of the approach of an enemy force of unknown size.

You must stop them from advancing and protect the civilian settlers in the area, inflicting as many casualties on the enemy as you can.

If at the end of a turn 2/3 of the enemy force has been removed as casualties you will have fulfilled your victory conditions.

The game
The company of the Pennsylvania Regiment was set up in the farm in the middle of the table.

Captain Nathan Whiting could hear movement in the trees to his front so decided to march his company out from the safety of the farm and form up in front of the edge of the woods.

On the edge of the wood appeared a company of French Marines. While the marines formed a ragged line the provincials delivered a completely ineffectual volley. The provincials and marines exchanged fire for several turns without hitting anything, the arrival of some militia was enough to send the provincials running back to the shelter of the farm.

Meanwhile the other settlement was defended by a company of very cowardly Roger’s Rangers. As soon as they spotted several companies of French-Canadian militia emerging from the woods to their front they ran away! Leaving the hapless settlers to defend the farm themselves! Only one of the settlers survived and after a desperate struggle with the militia – he succeeded in wounding several militia before overwhelming numbers decided that enough was enough and he joined the Rangers skulking in the wood, only to witness his farm being burnt to the ground.

In the centre of the board Gage’s infantry and the Mohicans were made of sterner stuff and sprang a trap on some advancing Coureur des Bois and Hurons. A bloody hand-to-hand combat ensued with the momentum swinging back and forth. The fight between the rival indians was particularly bloody with the Mohican leader being the last man standing, some more militia arrived to tip the balance in favour of the French, it took an entire company of militia to subdue the Mohican leader.

A company of British light infantry had been patrolling in the vicinity of the settlements and on hearing the musket shots rushed to investigate. The arrival of the British regulars was enough for the French-Canadian force, they had succeeded in burning down one settlement but not the other and had taken nearly 30% casualties.

The game was a marginal British victory although the commander of the Rangers was stripped of his command for not following orders and allowing the farm to be burnt down without attempting to defend it.

Pics are all by Joe Dever who was one of the militia commanders.

  1. Benoît de Perier says:

    Hello

I was amused to discover that you have given the name of my ancestor to one of your figurines. I just want to clarify that it is not his real name. His name was Antoine Alexis de Perier de Salvert and not “Périer de Salvert”.

“Lieutenant Périer de Salvert of the Compagnes Franches de la Marine. Irregular.”

    Sincerely
